When President Richard Nixon famously said, “When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal,” heads turned across the country. Put into context, that argument was not as egregious as it sounds, but it was a window into the mind of a seriously flawed president whose flagrant disregard for the rule of law led to his downfall. Nixon’s paranoia, ruthless retaliation toward his political opponents, and thuggish behavior are eerily reminiscent after the leak of President Donald Trump’s letter from his lawyers to Robert Mueller. They argue that the president is above the law, and that, combined with Trump’s assertion during the campaign that he “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” should turn heads across the country.
Trump’s “lock her up” mantra, attacks on anyone perceived as a critic, name-calling, lying, and racist comments should each be universally condemned, but his voters have only rallied to his side. And his claims of being above the law, though as specious as any Nixonian violation of norms, rules, and constitutional law, will only escalate if there is no check on his behavior.
But the right, led by Fox News, talk radio, and massively funded, hate-filled conspiracy theorists, don’t seem capable of reversing course. And though our founders put into place checks and balances meant to preclude the abuse of power that Nixon and Trump embody, they failed to envision a Congress that put tribalism and power above country.

People who voted Trump thought he was right person for the job because he was a good business man. Well if they had looked into his past they would have know he wasn’t. He cheated many hard working Americans out of there money so he could get rich!
Any news Trump doesn’t like he calls fake. That’s is why he prefers FOX News (F for Fake) because they spin the news for him!
Trump being rich doesn’t understand our government is not a business. It’s more like a service to serve the peoples needs. Our taxes pay for police, fire, roads, bridges, social security, FEMA, military, airports, port security, plus so much more.
Cutting government jobs the way Trump has been doing only hurts us Americans. He doesn’t understand that poor people need to talk to social security agents, or medicare, medicaid agents. Americans out of the country need help from our embassies from time to time. Cutting these kind of jobs puts more Americans in harms way.
Trump is not helping us. He is just destroying all the good things that America stood for!
The new head of the EPA, appointed by President Donald Trump, is Scott Pruitt. Pruitt has said that he doesn’t believe that carbon dioxide is a primary contributor to the global warming we see. His view is in direct contradiction with mainstream climate science including NASA, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the EPA itself. NASA, NOAA and EPA have many top-flight scientists in their organizations who know quite well that he is simply wrong in this statement.
So what are Pruitt’s qualifications to make such a statement? He got a bachelor’s degree in political science and communications in 1990 and a law degree in 1993. In another words, he’s a common lawyer, whose closest brush with science is political science! Before entering politics he worked in private practice, where he specialized in constitutional law, contracts, insurance law and labor law, litigation and appeals. This technical lightweight apparently is ignorant to climate science.
Unfortunately, his boss Trump (who said even worse: “Global warming is a Chinese hoax”) and apparently the Republicans in Congress who supported his nomination are also ignorant to climate science. This man is an embarrassment to the EPA. His knowledge of climate science is appalling. I am truly saddened for this country that there is such climate science incompetence in such high and powerful places. A political party can make a statement about science, but that doesn’t change the real science nor make their politically motivated statements true.
I am a Vietnam-era veteran with no political party preference; since 1972 I’ve voted for Democrats, Republicans and Independents. My presidential choice didn’t always win, but I consistently tried to show respect. Until now, no president in my lifetime possessed qualities and attributes that would prevent him from being president. At times it was difficult to support these presidents, but free speech gave me the right to question the direction of our country without reprisal
I am at a crossroads. I cannot find it in my heart, my mind or my conscience to unequivocally support the current president. I don’t enjoy this. But the leader of this (already) great country must be honest, trustworthy and ethical — and support the best interests of all ethnicities, races and religions. Sadly, our president does not come anywhere near this description.
Frankly, I wish I didn’t have to make this decision. But the continual misleading statements and validated lies, sophomoric and crude behavior, disparaging remarks about women, minorities, immigrants and the handicapped, and critical and insulting remarks about our closest and enduring allies leave me little choice. Combine this with the president’s positive statements about Russian President Vladimir Putin, and I just shake my head in wonderment and angst.
Why are rational Americans tolerating this boorish, foolish behavior? Don’t Americans recognize a selfish, self-serving bully who criticizes anyone who disagrees with him? My father — a patriot, World War II veteran and the greatest man I have ever known — would be appalled at our president’s lack of integrity, empathy and compassion.
My dad told me, “You will never reach higher ground if you are always pushing others down.” The president should heed my father’s advice. Continuing his behavior will divide our country, alienate our strongest allies and create the real possibility of a major multi-national war.
Why are so many on the right afraid of helping all Americans to get health care? Simple answer is money! Republicans like to make money plain and simple. From small business to big business it’s all about money and not what’s right for most people.
Some things should not be about profit. Peoples health is not a political game of the right against the left! It’s a moral given!
The ACA or what the republicans named it Obamacare is a start for Americans toward better health care. Now it’s time to fix it not break it! So many people in Canada, England and other countries like what they have for health care. We should be looking to other countries to see which one has the best for there citizens! We don’t need to start from scratch when there are so many examples around the world!
Many of my friends tell me they are worried about terrorism. I’m not! Am I suicidal? No, I’m not!
Here are a few facts: From Sept. 12, 2001 to Dec. 31, 2015, there were 104 people killed by terrorists in the US. That is about 7.5 per year. Of those, 24 were killed by foreign born terrorists. That is about 1.7 per year. The others ( 80 people) were killed by American-born terrorists. According to the National Weather Service, in the last 10 years the number of deaths in the U.S. due to lightning is about 31 per year. So, it is clear that in the last 10 years we were at least 10 times more likely to be killed by lightning than a foreign-born terrorist. Are we so worried about being killed by lightning? I don’t think so. I hope I have made my point.
So why do we have this onerous immigration ban in effect? I suspect it is a combination of an ignorant Donald Trump and his unwitting accomplices, the television business. Television knows that sensationalism sells. And Trump is just riding the wave of public sentiment to bolster his popularity.
Understand that I strongly believe that the U.S. government should continue to devote resources to screening immigrants and foreigners for terrorism or other threats. Kudos to the CIA, the FBI, Homeland Security and all those that keep us safe – but the facts do not warrant changes in immigration policy. You can check my facts and get many others from the report “Terrorism and Immigration, a risk analysis”, published September 2016 by Alex Nowrasteh from the CATO Institute. It is available on the internet for free.

I debated about writing this letter until I got the ad for the purchase of a “fully-functional Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum” in my morning paper. Is this how we make America great again? When were we great? Was it when we brought captive Africans to our shores for slaves? Was it when we wrote that “all men are created equal,” except for non-whites, women, or even “white” men who did not own property? Was it when for the purpose of increasing representatives to the House in Washington we agreed to count slaves as three-fourths of a person? Was is when the native peoples of this country were repeatedly driven from their treaty-designated lands if those lands became desirable by white men? Was it when women were denied entry in medical schools, law schools, fired as teachers if they married, and couldn’t vote? Was it when Jewish and non-white people couldn’t live in certain areas? Was it when American citizens were harassed, tortured and hanged for not being white, Anglo-Saxon Protestants? Was it when American citizens of Japanese descent where taken from their homes and placed in internment camps? Was it when people of different racial backgrounds could not legally fall in love and get married in certain states? Was it when we retaliated against Iraq when we knew they were not responsible for 9/11?
Please, is this where we place our pride and greatness? And should I, with no background check, be able to buy a fully functional, gold-plated gun covered in “patriotic” symbols as a symbol of that pride?
It seems like Donald Trump believes only Donald Trump. He is given daily briefings and pretty much doesn’t read, listen or believe them. He always seems to say he know best about everything.
Now he gets upset because many of us won’t accept him as Americas President. Why should we?
We’ve known for a long time that many, many lies were being spread around from the right about Hillary Clinton. Now we no many of the stories were being pushed out by hacking from Russia. Now how much of this was known by Donald Trump? After all he said for a long time that this election was rigged. Many felt he was talking about it being rigged by Clinton and not the Trump team! Now we need to find out how much the Trump team knew and when? Remember Paul Manafort left the Trump team before the election and he and Trump both had dealings in Russia. We also know that Trump seems to sing the praises of our enemy Russian President Vladimir Putin all the time. Let’s be honest some of the Trump team knew what was going on with the leaked emails from the Russian hacking.
Trump seems to think that the hacking had no effect on his election as president. Well we know that Clinton’s poll numbers went down as more and more of these leaks came out. So I would think this alone plus the FBI Comey letter are what gave Trump the electoral college win. Trump called it early on the election was rigged and he won because of it!
Now we are as good Americans suppose to embrace him as our president? I don’t think this will happen for Trump. Trump set the example when he went after Obama as president with the birther movement. Trump also thinks that we are going to forget all the stupid nasty hate talk he said during the campaign or the fact that he still has not showed us his tax papers.
Trump always say’s trust me what do you have to lose? We have already lost our government to a rigged president, big oil, big business and Wall Street!
Thank you Trump voters for giving our government and country away and electing a man that did not win the vote of the American people!
